Overview
Agnone is a small town located in the Molise region of Southern Italy, situated between the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea. The beauty of this area is unparalleled in Italy, probably because it has a splendid balance between man and nature, intense spirituality, and secular pride. Agnone is famous for an ancient bell factory, which is testified by the town's International Bell Museum and the Pontifical foundry. The latter is the only foundry permitted to use the pontifical seal of appointment.
The history of this area dates back centuries to the ancient indigenous Sannite tribes, before it became a Roman settlement. In the middle ages, Agnone became home to a group of artisans from the Venice area, whose influence can still be seen in the urban plan of the town and a historic Goldsmith's workshop located in Agnone. On Christmas Eve, the "Ndocciata", a torch-lit procession, parades through the streets of the town. During the month of August, Agnone hosts the Fair of Ancient Arts and Crafts.
This is a wonderful area to explore, but we do not recommend doing it alone. Here, you can find one of Italy's most important "tratturi," which are traditional tracks used by shepherds for the passage of their flocks across the mountainous territory. The Giardino della Flora Appenninica is a botanical garden situated at a considerably high altitude close to Pescopennataro. It features a great number of species of flowers and trees from central and southern Italy.
The Molise region is situated on the edge of the National Park of Abruzzo and Molise, where the wealth of natural and artistic beauty seems endless. Agnone has a rich history; of Samnite origin, it was built on the ancient Aquilonia. Over the centuries, Agnone was a fief of the Angevins, the Caracciolo, and the Gonzaga.
The town and its surrounding area boast remarkable architecture and art of many religious buildings. Not surprisingly, this town is one of the few municipalities in Italy to be awarded the Orange Flag. This recognition is given by the Italian Touring Club and certifies the quality of village tourism and environment.
You can visit the mother church dedicated to St. Mark (XI cent.), the church of Sant' Antonio Abate, with a bell of the eighteenth century, the church dedicated to St. Francis with valuable works, and the church of St. Emidio, which houses thirteen wooden statues of the seventeenth century depicting Christ and the Apostles. Agnone also includes the "Pontificia Fonderia Marinelli" (pic n°5), the oldest bell foundry of Europe. For over 800 years, Marinelli has been creating bells for the town of Agnone, for Molise, and all over the world.
