Overview

San Gemini is considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in Italy 'borghi piu' belli' and it's easy to see when coming here, how it has made the annual list published in Italy year after year.

The town, like the stunning Umbrian countryside which surrounds the village has been inhabited since before Roman times and dates back to the times of the Etruscans and it has been beautifully preserved over the centuries.

Arriving in San Gemini wiil have you passing under a magnificent arch and into a lively town center filled with restaurants, local artisan shops, coffee shops and some intimate wine shops, where you can taste some of the finest Montefalco and 'Umbria Rosso' wines, the region is so famous for.

Inside the town, you can find the wonderful San Gemini Palace hotel, which is a lovingly restored hotel, which offers sweeping views over the green valley dotted by rolling hills in the distance.

The town centre offers important artistic and religious monuments, such as the church of San Francesco, built circa 1200, Gothic style, with a single central nave, gives testimony to the cult of Saint Francis in San Gemini: the church of Santo Stefano around which was built the first habitations; the priory church of San Carlo; the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, also known as the Palazzo del Popolo or Palazzo Vecchio, administrative offices; and next to that the Torre Esperia, tower with the bell to call town meetings built in 1318 by Maestro Matteo d'Orvieto .

Also of interest are the church of San Gemine (Duomo) from the 12th century, that contains the saint's relics; the abbey of San Nicolò (11th century), whose portal was sold to an antique dealer in the 30s and today is found in the Metropolitan Museum of New York.

Worthy of a visit are the Geolab Earth Sciences Museum with interesting interactive displays aimed at promoting Earth.   Sciences; Museo dell'Opera di Guido Calori exhibiting the paintings and sculptures of Guido Calori, as well as the files, drawings, sketches, and tools coming from his studio in Rome. Of considerable interest is the Carsulae Archaeological Area, which was an ancient Roman municipium that grew around the Via Flaminius: the excavations and research carried out have brought to light a good part of the Forum, including the remains of the basilica and twin temples; the Theatre and Ampitheatre; and the beautiful Arch of San Damiano, beyond which can be found funeral monuments of particular interest.

Aside from San Gemini's incredible ancient history and what seems like limitless sites to explore, the town offers easy access to the San Gemini natural hot springs which are contained in beautiful natural park.  The town is famous for the San Gemini spring water which is sold as an important water for digestive health all over Italy.

Within close access of San Gemini, you can easily access the incredible Marmorata waterfalls, which are some of the highest in Europe, the incredible Villa Lante, Civita di Bagnoreggio, Narni, Orvieto, Trevi, Spoleto and many other gorgeous Umbria hill top towns.

This jewel of a town has yet to be discovered by the majority of tourists to Italy.  Only 1 hour and 15 minutes north of Rome, this is a fantastic stop to make for a few days to explore this incredibly rich area of central Italy.

We spent three short weeks seeing Piedmont and experiencing wine paradise there, then heading to Nice in France with our private driver and flying to Rome where honestly 4 days is NOT enough. “This company really knows their stuff and recommended our family to stay longer in each location. We didn't listen to them, but wished we had in every single place we went. They recommended Sestri Levante over the Cinque Terre which was our favourite destination on our entire trip. We visited Rome where we stayed in the outstanding Hotel Locorno where they know the owner there, like in every place”
