Overview

Encircled by impressive walls and topped with a grand fortress, Volterra sits high above the rich farmland. More than 2000 years ago, Volterra was one of the most important Etruscan cities, a city much larger than the one we see today. Greek-trained Etruscan artists worked here, leaving a significant stash of art, particularly funerary urns.

Eventually Volterra was absorbed into the Roman Empire, and for centuries it was an independent city-state.

Today, Volterra, unlike the other famous Tuscan towns in Tuscany has a very real and vibrant feel. It is less touristy, perhaps because of its position, but also because it has maintained a less commercial feel than some of its neighbors.

The gorgeous countryside surrounding the town, beautiful rolling hills and 360 degree views make Volterra a worth-while stop in Tuscany. On a clear day you can even see the sea from here.
